A rapidly growing New Zealand charity was experiencing significant operational and technical strain as its services expanded. The organisation had evolved quickly, with new staff, sites, and systems added over time, resulting in a fragmented IT environment that combined legacy on-premises infrastructure, inconsistent cloud adoption, and ad-hoc processes.
This complexity made it difficult to scale services efficiently, maintain strong security and governance, and provide reliable access to systems for staff working across multiple locations. Leadership needed a clear, strategic technology direction to simplify the environment, reduce risk, and ensure the organisation could continue to scale sustainably while maintaining focus on its core mission of supporting the community.
Solution
Through CloudSquared’s Virtual CTO service, we partnered closely with executive leadership to review the existing technology landscape and define a pragmatic, scalable IT strategy aligned with the charity’s operational and growth objectives.
We conducted a comprehensive assessment covering infrastructure, identity management, data storage, security posture, and operational workflows. Based on this assessment, we designed and implemented a simplified, cloud-first architecture centred on Microsoft 365, modern identity and access controls, and secure, centralised data management.
The solution prioritised scalability, resilience, and ease of management. Legacy infrastructure was rationalised, systems were consolidated into a unified and secure platform, and governance controls were established to ensure consistency and long-term sustainability. This approach provided the flexibility to scale services up or down quickly as operational needs changed, while maintaining strong security and operational integrity.
Outcomes
The charity gained a modern, streamlined IT environment that enabled it to support rapid growth without increasing complexity or operational overhead. Staff could access systems reliably from any location, collaboration improved across teams, and leadership gained confidence in the organisation’s technology foundation.
